First Aid for you PC

So you think your infected?

Many common computer errors are blamed on a virus attack. However this is rarely the case as when a virus strikes you can usually tell.

However sometimes they will become hard to spot and removing them can be either easy or hard so we will have a look at both.

What is a virus?

Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operation.

A virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer, use your e-mail program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk.

Viruses are most easily spread by attachments in e-mail messages or instant messaging messages. That is why it is essential that you never open e-mail attachments unless you know who it's from and you are expecting it.

Viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files.

Viruses also spread through downloads on the Internet. They can be hidden in illicit software or other files or programs you might download.

To help avoid viruses, it's essential that you keep your computer current with the latest updates and antivirus tools, stay informed about recent threats, and that you follow a few basic rules when you surf the Internet, download files, and open attachments.

Once a virus is on your computer, its type or the method it used to get there is not as important as removing it and preventing further infection.

 Antivirus 2008-2009

This is a real bugger of a virus and is causing many problems for people. It comes in the form of an email eg from a fake CNN with a link to a video that then downloads the virus. It caused the system to slow to a crawl and also adds a new background with pop ups to a bogus antivirus. It also disables group policy so you cannot add or change the background. Here's how to get rid of it

1. Print out these instructions as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the following location and save it to your desktop:
Malwarebytes

3. Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one. Look here for usage instructions

4. Double-click on the icon on your desktop named Download_mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of
MBAM onto your computer.

5. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process.
Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave
both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the
Finish button.

6. MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before
performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to
close that box and you will now be at the main program as shown below.

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Screen

7. On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Perform quick scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button
to start scanning your computer for Vista Antivirus 2008 related files.

8. MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you
go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan. When MBAM is scanning it will look
like the image below

9. When the scan is finished a message box will appear
You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the VistaAntivirus2008 removal
process.

10. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.

11. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will appear. You should now click on the Remove
Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and
add them to the programs quarantine.

12. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the
log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

13. You can now exit the MBAM program.

Your computer should now be free of the VistaAntivirus2008 program. If your current anti-virus solution let this
infection through, you may want to consider purchasing the PRO version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to protect
against these types of threats in the future.

NOW

Then you need to go to
start run and then type gpedit.msc
Then go to
User configuration>Control panel>Display and then for the following:

  • Hide desktop tab
  • Prevent changing wallpaper
  • Hide appearance tab
  • Hide screen table tab

(double click) and set to disabled

The ENABLE screen saver

This will get rid of the virus and unhide your desktop tabs. DON'T TRY TO CHANGE WALLPAPER WHEN YOU HAVE THE VIRUS STILL ACTIVE
